LEGENDS OF RUNETERRA
Worldbreaker Collection 2022

Responsibilities // Copywriting, Narrative Writing

A collectible card game (CCG), Legends of Runeterra releases purchasable content based on distinct thematics, which range anywhere from summery pool party fun to the destruction of ancient worlds.

For the Worldbreaker Collection, we drew inspiration from Aztec myth, crafting a terrifying tale of larger-than-life titans shattering the world.

 WORLDBREAKER FLAVOR TEXT

Every card has unique flavor text which offers a glimpse into the story behind the card art. I got to write about the Worldbreaker champions destroying the world.

"When the moon smothers the sun, a creature of the deep will rise, surging forth with the tide.” - Prophecy of the First Destruction

“And he shall be called Nautilus, first of the titans, a harbinger of unholy terrors to come.” - Prophecy of the First Destruction

“From the frigid tundra, a brute of ice will saunter forth, his eyes aglow with malice.” - Prophecy of the First Destruction

“He will reign as Trundle, the chilling behemoth, entombing entire civilizations in frost.” - Prophecy of the First Destruction

Burdened with the gift of revival, the worldweaver resumed his eternal task, scattering saplings across the earth.

In the aftermath of destruction, he alone would knit the earth back together, coaxing life from its barren soil. But this hard-earned life, he knew, could never linger.

Numerous as the days, the saplings carried limitless potential, each an untapped source of renewal and rebirth.

“Gripped by a burning compulsion, the thing called Sion strode forth, seeking to crush the world that had granted him life. As he approached a neighboring city, he savored the anticipation of tearing its walls apart, brick by brick."
- The Epic of Anatu, Volume II, Part 1

“The city walls had withstood the brutality of countless wars, but they crumbled now against Sion’s relentless onslaught. Safely tucked inside the palace, the warrior Anatu knelt before her queen. ‘I am bound by oath to protect the city,’ she said. ‘Let me fight.’”
- The Epic of Anatu, Volume II, Part 2

“Brave Anatu drew back her bow, imbuing her arrow with radiant light, and let fly. Though her aim was true, the arrow piercing Sion’s core seemed only to enrage him further.”
- The Epic of Anatu, Volume II, Part 3

“The warrior Anatu begged her queen to reconsider, to seek out alternative sources of power. But Elise knew that if she did not act soon, her city would fall to the titans. Ignoring the prophecies which warned of a gruesome transformation, she sought out the forbidden rites, desperate for power beyond mortal reckoning…”
- The Epic of Anatu, Volume III, Part 1

“At sundown, the queen emerged an eight-legged monstrosity, her mind twisted by ravenous hunger. Those she had sworn to protect were now her prey, to be ensnared in her gaping maw.”
- The Epic of Anatu, Volume III, Part 2

“Struck by the warrior Anatu’s stray arrow, the greatest and final titan Malphite awakened from his centuries-old slumber, a forewarning of the world’s second end.”
- The Epic of Anatu, Volume IV, Part 1

“He had been content to remain dormant, even as his fellow titans gloried in the chaos of destruction. But as punishment for disturbing his rest, Anatu and the rest of her kind would feel the full force of his wrath.”
- The Epic of Anatu, Volume IV, Part 2

Malphite plunged downwards, fist clenched. Upon impact, the earth gave a heaving, shuddering groan…
